The redevelopment of Tonsley in Adelaide’s South reflects a long-term investment in the state’s economic capacity, skills and innovation, and will leverage South Australia’s existing capabilities and experience.
The vision for Tonsley mirrors key principles within the 30 Year Plan for Greater Adelaide which includes a vision to attract investment, draw employment and promotes competitiveness. It is also a key part of driving high-value manufacturing in South Australia with the Manufacturing Works strategy describing Tonsley as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to invest in knowledge and physical infrastructure.
Tonsley’s commitment to sustainability is already evident in building design and construction, infrastructure, lighting, energy, water and waste systems. The adaptive re-use of the Main Assembly Building has prevented the loss of approximately 90,000 tonnes of carbon emissions embodied in its original construction. Its rejuvenation has avoided carbon emissions of a scale equivalent to taking 25,000 average cars off the road for one year.
